Horse and Buggy (photo provided by Commonwealth Media Services) Pennsylvania’s mid-Atlantic location provides access to 6 major U.S. markets within a 500 mile (805 kilometer) radius of the state’s capital, Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania contains 800 airports; 140 are public-use with 16 scheduled service airports and six international airports (Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown, Erie International Airport/Tom Ridge Field, Harrisburg International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Pittsburgh International Airport and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. Annually, the state boards over 24 million passengers and moves almost 800,000 metric tons of air cargo.

Pennsylvania’s three major ports offer the state access to the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes as well as the Gulf of Mexico. The Atlantic is accessible through the deepwater Port of Philadelphia and the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence Seaway by the Port of Erie. The Port of Pittsburgh, the largest inland port in the U.S., offers access to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic, as well as to the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal.

Boasting the nation’s fourth largest railroad system, the Commonwealth contains 60 railroads with more than 5,600 miles (9,012 kilometers) of railways. Amtrak serves the state with five passenger routes daily: the Acela Express (Boston - New York - Philadelphia - Washington, DC), the Capitol Limited (Washington, DC - Pittsburgh - Chicago), the Keystone (New York - Philadelphia - Harrisburg), the Metroliner (New York - Philadelphia - Washington, DC) and the Three Rivers (New York - Pittsburgh - Chicago).

Endeavoring to improve its reputation of having the worst highways in the country, the state has budgeted almost $3.5 billion annually for road and bridge construction and maintenance for its 120,000 mile (193,121 kilometer) highway system.
